The Krishna District with its District headquarters at Machilipatnam is the coastal district of the Andhra Pradesh. It was formerly called as Machilipatnam District.
Later it was renamed as Krishna District after the river Krishna, by adding certain Taluks of the abolished Guntur District in 1859. Again, in 1925, Krishna District was further divided in to Krishna and west Godavari Districts. Further, there are no changes in its jurisdiction except some minor changes. The District is divided into 52 Mandals covering four revenue divisions. The population of the district is 36,98,833 comprising of 976 inhabited and 36 uninhabited villages. It takes third rank in population and density (424 Sq.km). There are five Municipalities. The literacy rate is 45.03% at the 1991 census.
